Waiting for the President IN this city of rumour and alarum, every shade of thinking is conditioned by the speculation around the Presidential election. Reading the newspapers, the impression is created that the ruling party at the Centre will soon be doomed to coalition tactics. Meet the traders, and they are busy buying gold and silver with hundred-rupee notes which they believe will be demonetised. Probe deeper, and one discovers that somebody is spreading the story that GOI under Indira Gandhi is about to nationalise everything! The sick Indian elite, obsessed with its mountain-topist role, is psychopa- thically exciting itself over noa-issues in the hope that the people will stir in ignorance and anger. The charge is that Indira Gandhi is a communist, acting under the orders of the Kremlin! The Prime Minister's angry retorts to this kind of charge are also inclined to be unbalanced. The shadowy Syndicate assiduously exploits this kind of tense situation for its own nefarious ends which are closely tied up with the fate of Sanjiva Reddy.
