UNITED STATES Prominence and Prejudice AMONG the regrettable episodes in US academic history of recent vintage was the case with which McCarthyism managed to purge radical intellectuals from colleges and universities. It is relatively easy therefore to imagine that "reverse McCarthyism" may now be operating against the hawks of the LBJ era who are currently tumbling out of power and trying to get back to positions of eminence in the academic world which they had relinquished for the corridors of power.
