February 3, 1968 as the all-India language of administration and government In the present mood of the people, particularly the student community, abolition of teaching of Hindi in schools may win mass support for the DMK Government, as an angry gesture of protest against the pro-Hindi bias of the recent amendment of the Official Languages Act But as a long-term policy it is clearly unsustainable. Taken together with the decision to replace English by Tamil as the medium of instruction at all levels of education, the move has already been criticised by the Congress as likely to isolate Madras and put the people of the State at a disadvantage in seeking all-India employment opportunities. Significantly, none of even the DMK's election-allies, except Swatantra, supported the Government resolution in the Assembly.
