Hence ships sailing between Far Eastern ports and Europe and North America which would nor- mally call at major Indian ports would avoid them, Indian shippers would also thereby be denied the advantages and economies offered by containerisation. On the other hand, containerisation calls for large initial investment not only in container ships but also in containers, deeper berths, stacking space in docks (about 50 acres for each container ship), mechanical handling facilities, specially designed rail wagons and road trailers and also a good road system.
