Excessive Self Reliance

THE Chairman of General Motors, USA, himself came all the way to ceremoniously open Hindustan Motors' new engine plant near Calcutta. Like General Motors in US, Hindustan Motors can claim to be the largest producer of road vehicles in India. There is, of course, some difference of scale, with General Motors mak-ing 4 million vehicles annually and Hindustan Motors less than 40,000. There are also some qualitative differ-ences between GM and HM, most of all in management and technical out-look. Of all the automobile producers in India, HM has the poorest reputa-tion for quality.
