Changing Pattern of Occupation and Income TILL a few years back, the hill areas of Assam were a closed book. Save a few administrative reports and some monographs, there was nothing on record about them. Part of the information gap has, now been made up by the investigations of the Anthropological Survey, the NEFA Administration and the 1961 Census reports. In spite of these developments, this region has remained a nightmare for the planners for want of data on the economic life of the diverse 'peoples' (called 'tribes' in the Constitution) inhabiting this region.
