LONDON Fumbling with Nationalised Industries EVER since the National Coal Board acquired the British coal industry in 1947, Britain's nationalised industries have been the cause of political problems. The era of take-over of important sections of private industry by the public sector began with nationalisation of the coal industry, though certain public services had been nationalised before the war. During the term of the Labour government immediately after the war, Bank of England, the air corporations, many transport industries, the gas and electricity industries and the major part of the iron and steel industry were all nationalised. The Conservatives sold the iron and steel industry back to private interests in 1953, but in 1967 Labour once again took it over for the State.
