clearly emerging: unless Indira Gandhi begins to assert herself more fully, both in decision-making and in the follow-up, the old bandicoots are hell-bent to reduce her to a totem behind which they can manipulate the levers. Not that this tactic is going to salvage the Congress party. Indeed, it spells death for it. But, then, who cares? Certainly not the bandicoots whose days are numbered anyway. The younger elements in the party have cause to worry. If the talk at Hyderabad is to set the style, then it looks very much as if they will have to search for new and more purposeful alignments.
