LUCKNOW-Focussing the Economic Beam

Poona would have faced the civic poll with the same equanimity with which it faced the last general elections but for the unexpected entry of the Shiv Sena, that legendary organisation from Bombay, into the fray. About 350 candidates are expected to file their nominations for 73 scats. The contestants include the Congress civic organisation, Nagari Sanghatana, Poona City Service Committee (Pune Nagar Seva Samiti), Jan Sangh, Communists and so on. The main contest is between the Sanghatana and the Samiti. True to its national image, the city Congress is a house divided. Campaigning has not so far started in earnest, but the Shiv Sena inaugurated its campaign two weeks ago with much fanfare.
