So when the 90-day rule of P C Ghosh came to an end actual procurement was only a little over a lakh tonnes during a period of large market arrivals from the new crop. And, despite a lot of fanfare, Dharma Vira's personal stewardship has been hardly more successful. Total procurement up to the end of April amounted to 252,000 tonnes only. At the food conference referred to above the Food Commissioner suggested that the target of procurement as whittled down by the P C Ghosh government should be further slashed by half to 350,000 tonnes. This emaciated target also met with resistance from the assembled officials who finally agreed to a figure of 300,000 tonnes and were doubtful about even its feasibility.
