Competitiveness of India s Tea Exports-A Comment

A Comment P R Sengupta / S Gulati argues ('Competitiveness of India's Tea Exports', February 17, 1968) that following the devaluation of sterling and of the Ceylon rupee the margin of profit enjoyed by Indian exporters of tea is likely to be cut and that, therefore, there should be a corresponding reduction in export duty on tea. This argument is tenable only on the assumptions that Ceylon will take advantage of the devaluation of its currency to reduce the price of its tea and that Indian exporters will not be able to match the lower price of Ceylonese tea. Neither assumption appears to be valid.
