(Can one imagine Pompidou, for example, making a speech which is found irritating, annoying or inflammatory by official and public opinion in the EEC countries, the United States, the UK and the other EFTA countries, Canada and Israel?) The Gaullist era will almost certainly end with de Gaulle.
