SOUTH-DMK and Thanjavur

THE DMK's great triumph in the recent Lok Sabha by-election from South Madras has belied the hopes of those who were counting on a rebirth of the Congress through intensive mass campaigning by Kama- raj. No effort was spared in the by- election campaign to attempt to project a new, popular, mass image of the Congress; unprecedented regular street corner meetings were addressed by the Congress President himself. But to absolutely no avail the by-election result has stunned the Congress.
