Rumblings in Tanzania

from Tanzania in surprising and somewhat obscure circumstances has given rise to a great deal of speculation. There have for a long time been rumours about the disaffection of Kambona with the government but they were largely dismissed. It has become fashionable to attribute all the radical measures of Nyerere to the influence of Kambona; he came to be regarded as something of Nyerere's evil genius. He was pictured as a highly ambitious person, and more than one newspaper, has had to pay heavy damages in libel suits for suggesting that he had been plotting to overthrow Nyerere. Despite all this, Kambona continued to work in close collaboration with the President, and on more than one occasion the President publicly testified to the loyalty of his former Foreign Minister. Thereafter the rumours tended to be discounted, except that this time the rumours were circulated not so much by the "imperialist" press but by members of the ruling party. Kambona resigned from the government a few weeks ago, two clays after ho had been moved from the Ministry of Regional Administration to that of Local Government and Rural Development
