The annual expenditure on Privy purses is Rs 5 crores which is worth much more than the equivalent income of any taxpayer because it is free of income tax. In addition, the princes get free medical attention for themselves and their families, free water and electricity in their original seats of residence, and exemption from motor vehicles tax and customs duty in specified cases. There are also some old convenants under which particular types of investment income are also free of tax, These payments and fringe benefits are liberal by any standard, though the princes consider them a modest return for their sacrifice in the interests of integration. It is true, Privy purses are guaranteed under the Constitution, and by individual convenants, but guarantees even if perpetual are not untouchable. They have to be in tune with changing circumstances.
