Universal Cables
THE DEMAND for cables is bound to improve in years to come in view of the accelerated emphasis on industrialisation and selfreliance outlined in the Fourth Plan draft. The growth in the production of cables has been somewhat retarded by the general setback in economic development in recent months. The power generating capacity of the country will be doubled from 10 million KW to 20 million KW during the Fourth Plan period.

Birla's Universal Cables is confident of taking full advantage of the increased demand. It has plans for substantial expansion and diversification. Following devaluation, the cost of imported raw materials has increased substantially. But due to liberalised imports and termination of the Scarce Industrial Materials Control Order, production will improve considerably in due course, which would bring down the cost of production by fuller utilisation of installed capacity.
