The proposal put forward by the Indian Cotton Mills' Federation to hold the price line in cotton through its scheme of self-discipline have sparked off a controversy, as was anticipated in these columns, between the industry and the trade, especially with regard to the modus operandi of the scheme.

While the East India Cotton Association and the Bombay Cotton Merchants' and Muccadums' Association generally agreed with the Federation on the imperative need to prevent any undue rise in cotton prices, they objected to some of the ICMF stipulations.In the event, the 22point draft scheme circulated by the Federation has yet to be finalised when there is hardly a week for the cotton season to end.
