Dim Prospects for Belapur

Dim Prospects for Belapur THE CHAIRMAN of Belapur Co Ltd, Neville N Wadia, feels that the prospects for the sugar industry for 1966-67 are not bright because the drought conditions have resulted in a decline in acreage and per-acre yield of cane. He states in his annual statement to shareholders that the production of sugar in the country would decline to about 30 lakh tonnes from the record output of 35.6 lakh tonnes achieved by the industry during the year ended October 1966. The lower output would, however, be supplemented by the higher carry-over stock of about 9.6 lakh tonnes (against 6.9 lakh tonnes available last year) and the total sugar available during 1966-67 would therefore be about 40 lakh tonnes against the internal consumption of about 28 lakh tonnes and exports of about 4 lakh tonnes.
