The Old vs the New in Fertiliser Technology

(From a Correspondent) IN SPITE OF the rather well-defined theme of the seminar organised by the Fertiliser Association of India from December 9 to 11 in New Delhi, the discussion extended to the general strategy for developing the fertiliser industry in the country. FAI is mainly an organisation of fertiliser producers in the private sector; it has so far not been able to secure the association of the public undertakings in the field. This character of the FAI came out sharply in the discussions and the contrast between the views expressed at the seminar and those of the Fertiliser Corporation of India as expressed at a similar seminar held last year was striking. In fact one almost got the impression that the seminar had been organised specially to rebut the views of the F C I on the feasibility of setting up fertiliser plants with Indian technical know-how and on the basis of internally available raw materials. The main purpose of the seminar seems to have been to create a climate of opinion favourable for foreign private collaboration in the fertiliser industry.
