What is likely to happen is that the DMK will manage to rope in the Left Communists into some kind of confederal alliance while the Right Communists will adjust with both the DMK and the Left parties while not coming into any kind of front with the Swatantra or Muslim League. It may well be that this will cost it scats as well as votes but it could also help its reputation and image at a later date. Beginning of a Bandh Movement In the meantime Tamilnad has seen the start of a bandh movement with a fairly successful shut- down in Thanjavur District recently. Despite its being regarded as the granary of the South, (here is scarcity there today accompanied by high prices. All the Left parties, as well as the DMK, joined the bandh. One wonders, however, whether this campaign will immediately fructify on a State-wide scale.
