What is Happening to the Indian Economy? An EPW Quiz

It is not a stretch to say that in the last year, the Indian economy has begun to crumble. According to data recently released by the government, India’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew at 4.5% in the last quarter, marking a six-year low. The ruling government, however, denies that the economy is in a recession.  Economic growth in India is currently unable to produce more jobs, the auto sector has seen large-scale unemployment, and the country’s current unemployment rate is the highest in the last 45 years. Moreover, external shocks—demonetisation, the goods and services tax—continue to be felt in the system, with the central government only recently compensating states for the loss in revenue under this new taxation regime.
