The landmark events were the abrogation of Article 370 and the declaration of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh as union territories, the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, which provides refugees Indian citizenship on the basis of their religion,  and the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Ayodhya dispute, which mandated that the land where the Babri Masjid once stood be handed over to a trust to ensure the construction of a Hindu temple. Fears over the erosion of civil liberties have been on the rise over the last few years.
