Computerisation of Land Records: Moving Slowly %X Moving Slowly The announcement by the Andhra Pradesh government of its plan to digitise land records in the state is one more of the rather haphazard attempts in the country to bring some order to the vast chaos. Andhra Pradesh is, of course, among the few states to make some moves towards computerising its land registration system. The mammoth task of computerising the entire land records of the state and making them available online is intended to enable property registrations and transactions to take place quickly and in a transparent manner. In a country where an overwhelming majority of the population directly depends on the land for a living, where land disputes take decades to settle, and where landholding is virtually the only asset of many, the importance of proper records, maintenance, and updating of land titles can hardly be overemphasised. Computerisation is a strong technology-driven tool to further this end.
