MA Applied Economics & PhD in Economics

CDS invites applications for admission to its full-time academic programmes, MA Applied Economics & PhD in Economics for which degrees are awarded by Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

The MA programme will commence on July 26, 2021 and PhD Programme will commence on August 02, 2021.

MA Applied Economics

This is a unique master’s programme in economics that aims at providing rigorous training in theory, tools and methods for applied economic analysis, with a special focus on issues of economic development. This four-semester Programme comprises sixteen courses (nine compulsory and seven optional courses). One of the compulsory courses in the fourth semester is a project that allows the students to apply the theory, methods and tools learned in other courses on an empirical economic issue under faculty supervision. Students from SAARC countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka) can also apply.

  • Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree in any discipline, with at least 50 percentage of marks. Candidates from SC, ST & Persons with Disability (PWD) (≥ 40% disability) are eligible to apply irrespective of the percentage of marks scored in the qualifying degree.


PhD  in Economics

The PhD Programme admits students from any discipline. The unique aspects of the programme are a focus on Applied Economics from a plural perspective and adaptation of effective learning tools. The coursework, spread over two semesters, comprises courses on research methodology, quantitative techniques, economic theory and its application to selected economic problems and Indian economy followed by a dissertation.

Eligibility: An MPhil degree from any Indian university recognized by the UGC or from a foreign educational institution OR Master's degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in General Category and 50% marks in OBC (NCL),SC,ST and Person with Disability (PWD) or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) OR an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency.

Selection MA

Candidates are required to apply online through the online application portal available in the website:  Admission process for this year’s MA programme consists of two stages. In the first stage, candidates will be short listed for an online interview on the basis of their adjusted marks obtained in Bachelor’s Degree. Marks in the Bachelor Degree are the total marks obtained by the applicant in all the subjects including languages and subsidiary subjects, if any. In the second stage, shortlisted candidates will be called for an online interview and final selection will be done solely on the basis of the interview. Selection PhD

The admission process is different for JRF and non-JRF holders. In the case of candidates having JRF through CSIR/UGC NET examination, the admission will be based solely on personal interview. The interview will be conducted online.

Selection of candidates belonging to Non-JRF category will be based an entrance examination and personal interview. Due to Covid pandemic the entrance examination & interview will be conducted online.  Final selection will be based on the combined scores of the entrance examination and interview.


Statutory Reservation for candidates from India belonging to SC, ST, OBC (NCL), EWS and Person with Disability(PWD) (≥ 40% disability) as per Government of India Rules.


PhD scholars may avail UGC’s JRF/SRF, RGNF, Moulana Azad Fellowships and Kerala State Government fellowship for SC/ST students. Students who have not qualified for fellowships from other sources may avail a small number of ICSSR fellowships on a competitive basis. Fellowship award will be based on a separate interview in the presence of sponsoring agencies.
