Compensation to Victims of National Polio Eradication Programme

There is a case for compensation to victims of oral polio vaccine–induced polio disease on the lines of the United Kingdom government that announced compensation to patients who had contracted HIV or hepatitis due to tainted blood during the 1970s and 1980s.

The National Polio Surveillance Project (NPSP) is currently the only agency or organisation which collects information regarding any child up to the age of 15 years who develops paralysis, is labelled as acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) case and is investigated to establish the cause of paralysis.

Polio Eradication Programme: A Failure

Despite repeated assertions that the eradication of polio is imminent (and repeated extensions of the deadline for its eradication), the end of polio still does not seem nigh. An analysis of the reasons for the persistence of polio shows that the choice of vaccine was a mistake and the strategy needs a rethink.
