This is mainly a response to Janaki Nair (‘Language and Right to the City’, EPW, November 18, 2000), although towards the end a comment is attempted on the two articles accompanying her essay. On the whole Janaki Nair commands my attention, largely with endorsement, but also invites some supplementation and provokes some disagreement.
