MAHARASHTRA-School Teachers Plight

MAHARASHTRA School Teachers' Plight Jean Kalgutkar Urmila Banerjee ACUTE discontent is brewing among secondary school teachers in Maharashtra. A vast amount of rhetoric is mouthed about the aims of education and the tasks of the teacher. But there is a conspicuous discrepancy between the demands made on teachers and the appalling conditions under which they are expected to function. Little has been done to ameliorate the conditions under which the vast majority of teachers live and work. The long-standing demands of teachers in Maharashtra are: (1) reduction of the workload; (2) retraction of the pernicious circular ordering penalisation of teachers for poor results at the SSC examination; (3) full and timely payment of monthly salaries; and, most urgently, (4) an Education Act which adequately guarantees security of service.
