Social History: Predicaments and Possibilities Sumit Sarkar Research on modern Indian social history, here or abroad, cuts a sorry figure. A considerable gap remains between our understanding of the basic structures and tendencies of the colonial economy and the much-explored history of political movements in late colonial India. This area of silence relates to the vast and virtually unexplored terrain of forms of popular consciousness and culture. The gap is related to lack of fruitful dialogue between history, sociology and social anthropology.
