Gouribari: What Next? Subodh Dasgupta THE developments set in motion in January this year but still unfolding themselves at Gouribari in north Calcutta and some of its adjacent areas deserve to be briefly recapitulated. The tough mastan, a term universally employed to denote a marauding anti-social of the worst type, and his equally brutalised lieutenants, residing or operating in Gouribari and a wide-flung area radiating from it and virtually holding the population of more than 50,000 to ransom, were bodily thrown out of the area, by what can only be termed a general uprising of the local inhabitants almost to a man. The 'uprising' was hailed far and wide, as evidenced by the sort of pilgrimages to Gouribari undertaken by groups of citizens from adjoining and outlying areas.
