John F Richards: A Brief Memoir

The historian John Richards, who died recently, had a vast range of intellectual interests and published widely on Mughal India, south Asian economic history, comparative world history, ecology and deforestation in south Asia and world environmental history. A personal tribute.

A Tribute to Dharma Kumar (1928-2001)

Dharma Kumar was a controversial figure, one whose role it was to call into question the comfortable views of a series of established orthodoxies. At times in doing so she could rub even close friends the wrong way. But no one who studied with her will forget her generosity (whether intellectual or personal) and the wide intellectual horizons she opened up. In an academic world where petty intrigues are the rule, there was nothing in the least small about Dharma Kumar.

Remembering Burton Stein

Sanjay Subrahmanyam Burton Stein, who died in London on April 26, was a historian, but also a person with a considerable engagement to radical action. A no-nonsense interlocutor, he had a special gift for cutting through the Gordian knots by which Indian history is so plagued.
