Towns in a Tribal Setting

Ramesh Chatidra Gupta Towns in the Tribal Setting by Brij Raj Chauhan; National Publishing House, Delhi; pp xiv+207; Rs 25. THIS book is based on a research report on "Towns as Centres of Diffusion in the Tribal Setting in Rajas- than*'. In its present form, the book is designed to contribute (1) to cultural anthropology through its focus on the primitive setting and the process of diffusion; (2) to urban sociology because it is the town that has been considered as a lamp-post of diffusion; (3) to rural sociology since the study shows how some of the settled rural communities (tribal and non- tribal) are responding to the challenges of urbanisation, how the travelling influences of contemporary urban-industrial civilisation through the vast network of small and large towns are reaching these remote areas and to what extent these are accepted, rejected or modified by the tribal and rural folk; and (4) to policy-making since the aimed and achieved insights are intended to benefit those who are engaged in the task of linking the tribal and non-tribal rural communities to the mainstream of the country's socio-economic and political development.
