Women and Sexism Language of Indian School Textbooks

Language of Indian School Textbooks Narendra Nath Kalia Sexist language, by redlining social reality mirrors and enhances a collective strategy for gender-based discrimination. Today's writers and editors cannot evade the responsibility for sexist usage especially in materials specifically produced for classroom consumption. And yet, Indian textbooks continue to exude sexist bias both in terms of choice of content as well in their language. This article is based on a survey of 41 Indian school textbooks and supports the view that eliminating sexist language is an important precondition to destroying sexism in society.
