‘Ban’ on Reporting From Kerala Courts

The entry of the media to the open court to report its proceedings is a constitutional right, not a special favour of the judges or advocates. Court proceedings and wider functioning of the judiciary are subjects that the public have every right to scrutinise. The bar association activists’ act of preventing the media from entering the courts of Kerala is illegal, unconstitutional, and hence, punishable.

Kerala Elections 2016

The ruling United Democratic Front's chances of coming back to power in the forthcoming elections in Kerala seem bleak, while a resurgent Left Democratic Front is gearing up to form the government. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party's showing in the 2015 local body elections may be the uncertain factor in the calculations.

Mystery of the Kerala Poll Results

The United Democratic Front was expected to easily defeat the Left Democratic Front in the 2011 elections in Kerala - but it came very close to suffering a defeat. Just one person - V S Achuthanandan - with his incredible political sense and timing almost pulled off what no chief minister since 1977 had done. The irony is that VS' targeting of the leaders of the Indian Union Muslim League and the Congress only served to consolidate the minority votes in the two parties. The UDF may have finally won the polls but a fractious coalition ruling with a thin majority can only mean an unstable government and possible mid-term elections.
