TRIPURA- Tribal Unrest

TRIPURA Tribal Unrest Manas Das Gupta TRIPURA has an area of approximately 10, 447 sq km, 60 per cent of which is hilly. The State is inhabited by a number of tribes, the largest among them being the Tripuris. They numbered about 4.5 lakh in 1971. The tribal population in Tripura constituted about 28.95 per cent of the total population which was 15.56 lakh in 1971. The remaining population is overwhelmingly Bengali-speaking. Thus, roughly speaking, less than one-third of the population of Tripura is now tribal and just over two-thirds non-tribal.
