goondas attacked the procession the peasants retaliated by taking the land- lord, his police patel brother and two others as hostages. They were taken to the adjoining forest of the neighbouring Palthem village, which is a Sangham stronghold. They were allegedly forced to fell trees for 15 minutes as a symbolic gesture. With the landlord in their custody the peasants forced the police to negotiate. A revenue divisional official, an additional superintendent of police on the government side, the landlord and his brother on behalf of the landlords and the peasant organisers, including their leader Koteswara Rao, on the side of the peasants participated in the talks. After an agreement was reached to resolve the immediate problems of Ranaid, Palthem and Takkel- lapalle villages, the captives were released unharmed by the peasants.
