Limits of Populism-Devaraj Urs and Karnataka Politics

September 11, 1982 Devaraj Urs (1915-82) has left an imprint on the politics of Karnataka which will be difficult to obliterate. Even after relinquishing office, the impact of some of his policies and, more irnportant, of his quite unique personaliy was perceptible.

Undone by His Own Creation Lalitha Nataraj THE election results in Karnataka have confounded everybody. Not even the worst enemies of Devaraj' Urs expected his party to receive the drubbing it has at the polls. Urs who believed himself to be invincible has been humiliated because in several constituencies rank outsiders have soundly beaten the Congress Candidates. In many of them, Urs's candidates have come a poor third. Janata has also failed but has at least the consolation of winning the Bangalore city seat and of forcing the Congress into the third place.
