Development of Muslims

By the early 2000s Muslims in Gujarat were far behind those in Andhra Pradesh in terms of indicators of community well-being, such as educational attainment, industrial employment and public sector employment. Studying the well-being of the Muslim community in Gujarat is important in the context of the claims of Narendra Modi's much hyped "Gujarat development model". This article seeks to understand the status of the Muslim community in Gujarat in the period prior to the 2002 violence and compare the situation with that in AP, which has a somewhat similar profile.

Beef, BJP and Food Rights of People

On one hand the BJP defines SC, BC castes as Hindus, and on the other hy banning beef denies them their age-old food habits. If beef is banned it will he the beginning of the end of the country's multiculturalism.

Beware of Bureaucratic Doras

Kancha Ilaiah The staff associations of the central government employees have submitted a memorandum to the Fifth Pay Commission suggesting revised pay scales and other benefits for lAS, IPS and other government officers. The proposed salary structure indicates a conspiracy by the bureaucrats to squeeze the state's resources in order to indulge in western-style conspicuous consumption, even while the masses become increasingly impoverished.

Caste and Contradictions

Caste and Contradictions Kancha Ilaiah SHALINI SHARMA's contention (in her letter May 21) that I have, ignored the possibility of 'backlash' if caste becomes an ideology, when some dalit-bahujan castes become powerful or they begin to operate from the power position, as it is happening today in Uttar Pradesh, indicates that there is total lack of understanding of contradictions among various castes in India. While I am aware of the attempt of the upper caste intellectuals to put the cart before the horse whenever a dalit organic intellectual attempts to develop a theory of caste during the reservation period they became the protagonists of poor among dalit-bahujans and now there is this pretension that they arc afraid of a backlash among the dalit-bahujan castes il is important to understand the nature of contradictions among castes in India.

BSP and Caste as Ideology

riparian state. As of today, lampooning the decisions of the Tribunal by the government of Gujarat is evident in the way the people of Gadher and Vadgam were displaced this year As a matter of fact, when B D Sharma, as a part of his argument in the Supreme Court recently, was quoting from the Tribunal, one of the learned judge went to the extent of saying that "Why are you digging out these old things? ft is alright even if the Gujarat government has not adhered to the stipulations of the Tribunal". So much for the sacredness of the Tribunal.

Andhra Pradesh s Anti-Liquor Movement

Andhra Pradesh's Anti-Liquor Movement Kancha Ilaiah The anti-liquor movement in Andhra Pradesh, managed and spearheaded by village women, has shaken the government and the ruling parties. In time to come these women activists will no doubt pose questions quite different from those brought up by the urban women's movement.

SCs and STs Systemic Exploitation

The serious socio-economic questions raised by the 29th Report of the Commissioner for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes are likely to be relegated to the background by the rise of militant Hinduism and the recommendations made by it are likely to go unheeded by a system built on the exploitation of SCs and STs.

Reservations Experience as Framework of Debate

Reservations: Experience as Framework of Debate Kancha Ilaiah In the ongoing debate on reservations, the long-term impact of these provisions in education at the individual and social level has not received enough attention. A personal account of what it really means to have access to education, only because of reservation, to the individual, the community and to the village society I AM one of those who became a lecturer in Political Science under the BC reserved quota in Osmania University. Given the unwritten laws of patronage and access that determine who gets jobs in our institutions my first class MA. subsequent M Phil and several publications in all-India journals would not have brought me a job but for the reservation. In my university out of 1,200 teachers about 160 became teachers only because of reservations to QBCs, SCs and STs.
