Beef, BJP and Food Rights of People: Reading Kancha Ilaiah's 1996 Article

In view of the recent attacks on writer Kancha Ilaiah, we are republishing his 1996 article which was published as a Commentary in on 15 Jun, 1996 in Vol. 31, Issue No. 24 of the EPW. On one hand the BJP defines SC, OBC castes as Hindus, and on the other by banning beef denies them their age-old food habits. If beef is banned it will he the beginning of the end of the country's multiculturalism.

Merit of Reservations

Upper caste youth are not willing to tolerate the sharing of government educational facilities with youth coming from historically oppressed communities. But reservations and nation building are not antagonistic. The democratic and rational path charted by Ambedkar should be allowed to run its course; otherwise, an anarchist trend is bound to set in among the SC/ST/OBCs. Let the upper castes decide which course is better for the progressive transformation of this nation.

The State, Temples and Sai Baba

any rate may not like, if it realises, that it would be an instrument of a foreign game I would also like to believe that the youth who were exploited and used for disturbing peace in Jammu were ignorant of the implications of what they were doing and would respond to the call of patriotism.
