Decentralising Environmental Justice

Many consider that the National Green Tribunal, a relatively centralised and specialised court, set up in 2011 for “effective and expeditious disposal of cases relating to environmental protection”, is a misfit for a vast country like India, due to its inaccessibility to the majority of people.

The Bhullar Judgment Needs Reconsideration

The manner in which the executive and major political parties hurried the execution of the capital punishment of two convicts in the recent past has subverted the principles of clemency. This has been further boosted by the judgment on the appeal of Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar which has a populist, majoritarian tone. The rush to hang convicts bodes ill for our polity.

The Bhullar Judgement Needs Reconsideration

The proactive role of the executive and major political parties in subverting the principles of clemency and in hastening the execution of capital punishment for a couple of convicts recently will only enhance following the Devinder Singh Bhullar judgment which has a populist, majoritarian tone.
