It 's an extremely well-written book and indicates vast possibilities for further research regarding the women's movement in China. Perhaps the only objection of any consequence one can raise is that Davin's book does not say much about the socially handicapped women. How did the party deal with the drug addicts, the "playthings" of Shanghai and the brothel-keepers? Admittedly, the spread and persistence of prostitution in any country is due to socio-economic factors and it can only be eliminated by tackling these factors. A detailed analysis' of the dynamics of social rehabilitation, however, would have been very useful.
