Crisis in Indian Cotton

The Indian cotton sector is in deep distress, thanks to the cumulative effects of drought, increasing costs of cultivation and declining subsidies. This comes at a time when there are growing exportable surpluses globally, and most other producing nations lavish subsidies and market support on their cotton farmers. Immediate steps, such as a temporary halt on imports, higher import duties, and investment in improving varieties are needed in order to resolve the crisis.
