Caste and COVID-19

The article looks at on-ground shifts in patterns of how the state and general public are treating sanitation workers, during the CoVID-19 pandemic. Based on interviews with sanitation workers in Hyderabad and Lucknow, three trajectories are identified in municipal and societal reactions to COVID-19. A variability is seen in how state and society respond in the face of renewed caste-based stigma underscored by inaction on the part of the state to concretely recognise sanitation workers’ rights.

 

We Are All Watching

We, as members of the global community of scholars, make an urgent appeal for justice in the most recent case of caste discrimination in an institution of higher education in India—the University of Hyderabad’s prejudicial suspension of five young Dalit students pursuing PhDs.

Caste Discrimination and Food Security Programmes

The findings of a survey in select states conducted in 2003 expose the patterns of exclusion and caste discrimination that afflict the government's mid-day meal scheme and public distribution system. This article investigates dalit participation in these programmes and also measures aspects of physical access, participatory empowerment and community-level access.
