August 31, 1985 UGANDA Second Coup d'Etat Henry Mapolu ON July 27 Milton Apollo Obote of Uganda made history by becoming the first African head of state to be overthrown by the army a second time. This second coup came only five years after he had been reinstated in power after being ousted by the first coup of January 1971. It was a dramatic turn of events, depicting in a rather bizarre manner some of the worst aspects of contemporary African politics.
