Has trade benefited female workers in developing countries? Evidence from a number of countries shows that export growth has created wage employment for women in large numbers. Their incomes, quality of life and status have improved. However, gender equality has not always improved. A number of factors, usually unrelated to trade, can impede women's ability to fully benefit from trade expansion.
