INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS-These Also Serve

These Also Serve GDP VERY few governments have such extraordinary champions of their foreign policy as Indira Gandhi's government has. To begin with, it has a host of intellectuals who can make out brilliant cases for all our doings and non-doings in the name of non-alignment and other high principles. Those intellectuals are extremely useful; for they know the right words for every occasion, use them very deftly and are usually happy if they are included in a delegation or two. They can then write out long essays on everything from Brezhnev's to Thatcher's visit. Those visits, as one of them told us, give us the two ends of our non-alignment spectrum. Some of these are, of course, not happy only with non- alignment. They see sterling anti-imperialism in everything that Indira Gandhi does or says. They are the optimists because going by the countries which Brezhnev has visited or might visit, which according to them is a criterion of anti-imperialist credentials of the host-leadership, the number of anti-imperialist world leaders must be alarmingly high causing quite a panic in the imperialist camp.
