INDUSTRY Economic Efficiency of Machinery Sector in India Findings of a World Bank Study THE findings of a confidential study by a World Bank team of the non-electrical industrial machinery manufacturing industry in India deserve serious attention'. Prior to the detailed study, a planning mission of the World Bank had come to India in May 1981 to identify branches in the machinery sector where India had a comparative advantage. Those finally chosen were cement making machinery, sugar manufacturing machinery, pulp and paper manufacturing machinery, pharmaceuticals and chemical manufacturing machinery, and boilers used in industries or in the power sector. The detailed study by the team which included industrial specialists, economists and financial analysts was conducted in July 1982. The team visited 10 different plants, and data for 10 more were collected by the Calcutta-based engineering consultants, Development Consultants and further analysed by the team.
