Macroeconomic Indicators

The advance estimates of kharif production in 2012-13 show that both foodgrains and commercial crops have suffered from an erratic monsoon. Foodgrain production is estimated to decline by 9.8% to 117.2 million tonnes in 2012-13 against the production of 129.9 million tonnes in 2011-12. The decline is reflected both in cereals and pulses. Oil seeds production is expected to decline for a second consecutive year by 9.6% on top of the decline of 5.2% in the previous year. Cotton and sugar cane production are also expected to show a decline of 5-6% in kharif 2012-13.

Macroeconomic Indicators

The ratio of foreign currency assets to domestic assets in the balance sheet of the Reserve Bank of India turned adverse from 89:11 in 2007-08 to 66:34 in 2011-12. A similar proportion of income from foreign sources to domestic sources turned much more adverse from 90:10 to 37:63 between the two years which reflects decreasing return on foreign assets. There was an absolute decline in income from foreign sources from Rs 51,883 crore to Rs 19,810 crore, while income from domestic sources showed a huge increase from Rs 5,868 crore to Rs 33,360 crore between the two years.
