Structural Adjustment in Latin America

Latin American countries in the early 1980s suffered from severe economic imbalances, large debts and high inflation levels. The cure attempted led to stagnation of the economies. This paper examines whether the structural reform programmes of the 1980s have led to better economic performance in the 1990s. It recommends that IMF should emphasise management of balance of payments rather than structural adjustment.
