Advocacy for an Institute of Human Studies

India has been marching towards self-reliance in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine disciplines; however, humanities and social sciences remain neglected. This article advocates the need for setting up a world-class institute for human studies that integrates scientific and humanistic pursuits, both pure and applied, with a focus on holistic development rooted in human values.

Measuring Access, Quality and Relevance in Higher Education

Gross enrolment ratio is a widely accepted indicator to measure the level of participation in education. It is proposed that the eligible enrolment ratio could be a better indicator instead. A study of five-year data of 10 different countries highlights its significance. In addition, it is also critical to reimagine higher education as beyond general university degrees, and develop a complementary vertical of equal status of skill and vocational education and enhance employment opportunities.

Human Resource Development in Health Services

This response to Javid Chowdhury ("National Health Policy 2015: A Narrow Focus Needed," EPW, 28 February 2015) and Anant Phadke ("Slippery Slope for Public Health Services," EPW, 28 February 2015) argues that a course designed to create a mid-level cadre of healthcare providers lacks the vision to address the country's needs.
