The aim of the author, a senior research fellow of the Institute of Oriental Studies, was to analyse four interconnected aspects : (1) the process of ethnic consolidation of different communities under the impact of external and internal factors; (2) the growth and development of the movements for autonomy; (3) policies or the federal government in respect of the hill tribes; and (4) dynamics of political evolution of the states and union territories after the reorganisation of Assam and upto the parliamentary elections of 1980.
